Inspired by "Time the Stone Makes an Effort to Flower" (TSLR7)
“It was the middle of August and I didn’t know any other way to be a girl. I didn’t know any way to be a boy, or a flower. Or any fine, chiselled thing. I didn’t know”
In a jerking move he opens his mouth and jams the dipelta into his throat. Gone are the colors, the sounds of flowers. But he can taste her, and he tastes and tastes, swallowing the bitter tea.
“There are women who remain living artefacts of a time before time, that is really only less than a lifespan ago.”
“In terms of the order and structure, I was thinking a bit about the shape of a spiral and also the way that memory is associative, not linear, the way that remembering one image sometimes brings up the next image.”
“She was suddenly struck that she had no children and therefore, of course, no grandchildren — something that had gone quietly unnoted in her conscious mind all these years”
“I come to associate Shanghai with a light wind gusting off the surface of the river, the sound of the Custom House bells at my back: a reminder not only of the passage of time, but of a past time preserved in the present”
